This week highlights another west-coast native: Oregon grape! On Thetis we have two species: tall Oregon grape (Berberis aquifolium) and dull Oregon grape (Berberis nervosa) (note: previously of the genus Mahonia).
Both possess berberine, which gives the root that bright yellow colour, and is a potent alkaloid used to treat various ailments, from stomach upset to diabetes and infections. But beware, higher doses can cause vomiting, lowered blood pressure, and reduced heart-rate - so treat it with care! The berries are edible, but quite tart tasting, so if that’s your thing, go for it.
